How to decorate your living room like a pro
1. Identify your style:
When decorating your space, first find out what is your ideal style. Is it fine lines, patterns, exposing wood grain or solid colours? There is a variety of platforms from where you can look at various styles and designs. I would recommend Pinterest. Once you’ve determined your style, now comes the fun part: purchasing new furniture! Start with the big items—a sofa, rug, and an entertainment center—since they take up the most space and are the focal points of the room.
2. Pick the perfect colour:
The best way to determine what colour you want is to have a peak inside your wardrobe. At the same time you also want to pick a colour that you want to see everyday. You can also play with lighting as lighting affects the shade of colours and the strength. When you go to pick paint, either go for a perfect shade of white, a color that flatters every tone, or go for bold in a dark shade of red or brown or even black. A mostly blue and green room will have a calming effect, while vibrant colors (reds, yellows, oranges) are energizing. A neutral room of whites, tans, and grays is the perfect canvas for bright, bold accents.
3. Do not be boring:
Vary sizes and shapes of decorative pillows to add interest. Every now and then stick a round one in the mix. Get that ridiculous coffee table, use natural wood or get that complicated painting that no one understands. Nothing is more boring that going to a dinner party with all the same types of people right? Same with pillows. Make it interesting!
4. Lengthen your ceilings:
To create an illusion of taller ceiling or larger windows, hang curtains from as high up as possible!
5. Step back and look at your existing furniture:
To make space, get rid of furniture that’s damaged, outdated, too large, too small, or that you just don’t like anymore. If it’s a family heirloom or a piece you want to keep that doesn’t fit in the living room, give it a new spot somewhere else in your house.
Now that you have only the pieces you want to use going forward, you’re ready for the next step! And that is the actual decoration.
